Benedictine monks are not limited to a special field of work. Their activities depend mostly on the situation of their monastery and the circumstances of the time. So at Gerleve Abbey the activities have changed over the last hundred years. Agriculture lost its importance after World War II. The monk’s scope of duty is extremely versatile.
Worship: The most important duty of the monks is the celebration of the liturgy from the Matins in the morning until Compline in the evening.
Pastoral care: spiritual guidance of individuals and groups in the guest-houses. Pastoral care in ecclesiastical institutions.
Research, teaching, documentation: Some monks publish theological and historical works. Others work in the library and in the archives of the abbey.
Monks are also involved in
horticulture: in the large garden areas around the abbey, beekeeping
handicraft: printing, bookbinding, bakery
book-trade: in the bookshop of the abbey
Others are involved in housework, administration, nursing-care in the infirmary of the abbey, service in the sacristy.
